Who is Luis Díaz?

Luis Fernando Díaz is 24 years old and was born in Barrancas, La Guajira, the northernmost part of Colombia, a place plagued by poverty and high rates of corruption in different sectors.

Luis Fernando is part of the Wayúu ethnic group. In fact, it was thanks to his belonging to these people that he began his path in soccer. Carlos Alberto 'El Pibe' Valderrama, a Colombian legend, discovered him when he was the coach of the indigenous communities' national team.

Luis Díaz's talent was such that he was recommended to play for Barranquilla FC, a second division team and subsidiary of Junior, one of the biggest clubs in Colombian soccer. In the humble team, he shone, to the point that he was constantly one of the sparring partners of the Colombian national team in their stays in the seaside city where they play the elimination matches.

In fact, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, after Diaz's brilliant night in third place in Copa America, said that since they trained with the senior national team, in the times of José Pékerman, he could see the quality and potential he had.

From Junior to Porto to Liverpool

After his time in the promotion division, the youngster was promoted to Junior, a team in which he practically occupied the entire left wing of the Tiburón. In three years he raised his level, won four tournaments with the Barranquilla team, and was even runner-up in the 2018 Copa Sudamericana.

After his time with Junior, the Colombian went to Porto. He spent two seasons with the Dragons, where he scored 25 goals, making him one of their stars. Diaz is also remembered for scoring a tremendous goal against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. That goal came from the left, leaving men in the way and then beating Ederson with a cross-shot.

After his great performances with the Portuguese team, Liverpool bought the Colombian for 45 million euros in the winter transfer window of January 2022. Since his arrival to Anfield, the Colombian has shown his quality and has fit perfectly into Klopp's scheme.

Colombian National Team

The summer of 2021 came, an opportunity to shine with the Colombian national team in the Copa America, something that happened and with good results. He scored four goals, and nothing more than against Brazil, with a volley; against Argentina with pure speed and against Peru, for the third place, with a good definition and a powerful mid-distance shot.
