Even if his contract doesn’t start until July 1st, Erik ten Hag didn’t take time off after finishing his last season with Eredivisie side AFC Ajax and traveled on Monday to England, where he will begin planning what will be the 2022-23 Premier League Season for Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag wants a new midfielder for Manchester United, but it won’t be Edson Álvarez

Although ten Hag still has to solve who are the people that are going to conform his coaching staff, as well as engaging with current coach Ralf Rangnick, he also has to start thinking about the movements that the Red Devils will do over the summer.

One of the things that has to solve as quickly as possible is the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, as the Portuguese international still hasn’t decided his future, and although ten Hag said that he expects to have him on the roster, he knows that he needs to start looking for a new striker.

Even if Ronaldo decides to stay, the departure of Edinson Cavani as a free agent and Sevilla trying to keep Anthony Martial, will force the Dutchman to look for a new striker to add for the 2022-23 season, and the player he has in mind could end up replacing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Who is the player that Erik ten Hag wants?

According to reports from The Mirror, one of the players that Manchester United is looking to add over the summer, among the many movements that they plan on doing, is Uruguayan striker Darwin Nuñez, who currently plays for Primeira Liga side SL Benfica.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international had a breakout season with Os Encarnados as he managed to score 26 goals in the 28 games that he played, something that made him earn the golden boot for the 2021-22 season.

But even if his market value is currently set at $42 million, Benfica has established a release clause of $136 million for their top striker although they would accept a first offer of $73 million to start negotiations, a sum that the Red Devils are willing to pay.

Manchester United are not the only ones interested in Nuñez

Although reports from The Mirror suggest that the Red Devils are the favorite team to add Nuñez, the Uruguayan striker is also followed by Diego “Cholo” Simeone, who wants to add him to Atlético Madrid as the successor of fellow Uruguayan Luis Suárez, with Los Colchoneros having the advantage of playing Champions League next season.
