Although Edson Álvarez could have arrived at a bigger club when he left Liga MX back in 2019, he decided to join Eredivisie side AFC Ajax as the Netherlands top-tier division is known for helping young players establish in Europe before jumping to a bigger club.
Instead of taking a more direct pathway like Diego Lainez, who was his teammate in Club América, he decided to adapt first in Europe, while also playing for a team that usually contends for the title in Eredivisie and plays in Champions League every season.
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder has become an essential for Erik ten Hag and the Godenzonen, as he’s been a key player in the three titles that he’s won in the Netherlands, as well as the current season, where they are just one game away from winning Eredivisie once again.
Erik ten Hag wants to say goodbye to the team that he’s coached for the past 5 years with a new title, as he will be Premier League side Manchester United’s new coach for the 2022-23 season, although he might not be the only Ajax member that becomes a Red Devil for next season.
Several reports have linked the Mexico international to the Red Devils once it was announced that Erik ten Hag was named as the next Manchester United coach, although there hadn’t been an official confirmation about it until now.
During a press conference, ten Hag was asked about the interest he has to add some of his current players to the Red Devils, including Edson Álvarez, to what he answered that “there isn’t a clause that prevents me from taking with me players to Manchester United. I have great players here.”
The arrival of Edson Álvarez to Premier League will be to replace Paul Pogba, who will become a free agent at the end of the current season and doesn’t plan on renewing with United, as he already has offers from several teams, including Manchester City.
After Álvarez renewed with Ajax at the start of the season, he agreed to be part of the Godenzonen until 2025 with a $1.1 million per year salary, but if he joins Manchester United, they will be able to pay him between $5 million and $7 million, according to Salary Sport.
