Frank Lampard's welcome to the Premier League with Everton was not as expected. The former Chelsea manager, after winning in his debut with the Toffee team against Brentford in the FA Cup 4-1 to advance to the fifth round, was defeated by Newcastle which achieved their second consecutive victory.

Eddie Howe’s squad is finally getting the results they want. After the winter transfer window and with 5 new players, the Magpies are starting to function better to face the second part of the season. Trippier, Wood, and Targett, 3 out of the 5 signings were on the pitch.

Newcastle vs Everton Highlights

A fine free-kick goal from Kieran Trippier capped Newcastle's third win of the season on Tuesday, their second in a row, to beat Everton (3-1), climb out of relegation, reaffirm their belief in staying up and take comfort from the best reward of all, victory, the heavy investment with which they approached the winter transfer window. Miguel Almirón was on the substitutes' bench and did not start.

Newcastle had only won one game in the first 20 rounds. Now they have two wins in the two most recent ones. Already on the road to salvation are Newcastle, for whom their most brilliant reinforcement, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, made his debut in the final moments, entering the field just in the 90th minute, when Trippier, replaced by Javi Manquillo, also withdrew with some discomfort.

Everton netted first, however, they were not able to keep the advantage. The Toffees are following the opposite path to their opponents. It is their fourth defeat in a row, the sixth match in a row without a win - with five losses and a draw - and the warning that, if they slip up or continue like this, they will have problems to keep their place in the top flight of English soccer.

The first goal of the visitors came from a fortuitous chance in the 36th minute that ended with Jamaal Lascelles unintentionally chesting the ball into the net. Immediately after, Newcastle equalized when a good corner from Kieran Trippier was headed in by Lascelles himself to recover from the earlier mistake and make it 1-1 in favor of the Magpies. His shot was tipped over the crossbar and the rebound found Holgate for another own goal.

Injuries hampered Everton

Earlier, in the 34th minute, Everton had lost Yerry Mina. He single-handedly injured his right thigh when he took a pass, went to the ground, was treated, and left for the dressing room with an apparent muscle injury.

It was not the only setback in the same vein for the Frank Lampard-led side. Before the quarter-hour mark, Demarai Gray also went off. He was replaced by Dele Alli, one of the signings the club has turned to.

Newcastle went on to win, scoring 2-1 through Ryan Fraser's opportunistic finish in the 55th minute, before Kieran Trippier's direct free-kick in the 81st minute.
