Old Trafford witnessed a surprising first half. Southampton, displaying clear superiority over Manchester United, finally found reward for their improved performance just before the break, albeit in fortunate circumstances: an own goal from Uruguayan Ugarte in the 43rd minute put Southampton 1-0 up, leaving United reeling as the half-time whistle blew. With the entire second half still to play, the outlook for the home side is, to say the least, concerning.

From the kick-off, Southampton showed a much more purposeful approach than Manchester United. With organised play, a high press, and quick transitions, the Saints managed to dominate midfield and create consistent forays into the area defended by Onana. United, on the other hand, were second-best in possession, showing sloppy passing and lacking clear ideas in attack. The performance offered by the Red Devils in this first half was a far cry from what is expected of a team of their stature playing at home.

Southampton's dominance didn't immediately translate into goals until the fateful 43rd minute, but dangerous chances were a constant threat. The United defence was under constant pressure, with several clear opportunities for Southampton testing Onana's reflexes. The Cameroonian goalkeeper, despite some decent interventions, was helpless to prevent the own goal that broke the deadlock.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Ugarte, attempting to clear a dangerous cross, inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net. Onana, stretching to his full extent, couldn’t prevent the ball from crossing the line, sparking celebrations on the Southampton bench and amongst their travelling fans, while a stunned silence descended upon Old Trafford. The goal, while a stroke of luck for Southampton, was a fair reflection of what had unfolded on the pitch: the Saints deserved to be ahead on the balance of play.

Ugarte’s own goal came as a cold shower for Manchester United, forcing them to rethink their strategy for the second half. The home side went into the interval with the urgent need to adjust their game, improve their ball circulation, and create more danger in attack. The fans, visibly unhappy with the team’s performance, expected a strong reaction in the second 45 minutes.

The 1-0 half-time scoreline not only gave Southampton the lead but also represented a significant psychological blow for Manchester United. The home side were outplayed in all areas of the pitch during the first half, and Ugarte's own goal compounded a first-half performance best forgotten.

Despite the deficit, the entire second half remained to be played. Manchester United had time to react and seek a comeback. However, they would need to display a vastly different performance to the one seen in the first 45 minutes if they wanted to avoid a home defeat against a Southampton side who had proven to be tough opponents and who, for the moment, were causing a major upset at Old Trafford. The pressure now firmly rested on the shoulders of United, who needed to respond in front of their home crowd.
