The upcoming January transfer window looks to be one of the most competitive Premier League windows in recent years. One of the most talked-about players is Marc Guehi, as he has gained such high demand from many of the best teams in England and Europe that many teams will need to adjust their plans for the second half of the season due to his growing popularity.

At 25 years old, Guehi has established himself as one of the most reliable and promising central defenders in the Premier League over the last several years. His current contract is set to expire at the conclusion of this upcoming season, which makes him an attractive option for many teams. As a result, many teams will be weighing the option of paying a premium price now to acquire him during this January transfer window or waiting until the summer to acquire him as a free agent.

Manchester City is in top

Currently, the front-runner for Guehi is Manchester City, as they are in need of a central defender to help them compete with some of the strongest teams in the Premier League.

In light of injuries sustained by several key defensive players including Josko Gvardiol (and Rúben Dias) and Pep Guardiola's team becoming the front-runners for survival at the "top" level in pursuing Guehi during the current transfer period. They are looking for immediate options that will fulfill their need to have a Player(s) that fit into the new definition of a centre back. "There are 15 years of experience as a top professional and multiple years in professional football", Pep stated. "We need someone that can take on that role and perform from the first day. We need someone that can lead this team into the future."

Arsenal, another team on the race

The Premier League club Arsenal has now officially entered into the market as an "Opponent" for City. They are currently competing against one another for exclusive rights to recruit Guehi. Although Arsenal have shown genuine interest for this Player, there is a dilemma for the Gunners in that there is a possibility of delaying his transition until January or trying to acquire him before he becomes a free agent in the summer. There are two scenarios; one where they need to pay Palace's alleged £40 million transfer fee or alternatively wait until he becomes a free agent. The latter option carries a substantial risk because another club could acquire him before he becomes available to Arsenal.

In addition to Pep and his players experiencing difficulty acquiring the right leader at the moment, Guehi represents a combination of youth and proven ability that Mikel Arteta and his Coaches view as essential not only for stabilizing their title challenge but also as a critical part of the long term plan for success.

A European Auction

The race is not only happening in London and Manchester. European football clubs, including Bayern Munich and Liverpool, are interested in acquiring the player. Therefore, instead of a simple signing negotiation, this is now taking place as an auction for talent. As such, the pressure is now firmly placed on Crystal Palace; they must decide if they want to sell their captain for £40 million or risk losing him altogether in several months for free.

Oliver Glasner Speaks

Manager of Crystal Palace, Oliver Glasner, has stated publicly how complicated the situation is. He explained that if a large enough offer comes in and as long as the player shows an interest in moving, then the club will have to consider the deal. While this is a sensible business decision, it shows just how tricky this is for a club that relies on Guehi for defensive stability in order to compete in the Premier League. Marc Guehi’s future is the top story this winter. Whether he remains until the end of the season at Selhurst Park or does a huge transfer to one of the top European clubs, his final decision will determine how things ultimately unfold in the Premier League.
