Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool appears to be drawing to a close. As reported by TeamTalk, the Uruguayan striker is among the players Liverpool are willing to transfer in the upcoming window. This news comes as a surprise to many, considering the significant investment Liverpool made in 2022, spending a considerable 85 million euros to acquire him from Benfica. However, Nunez has not consistently shown his full potential at Anfield, leading the club to explore alternatives in the market. The names strongly linked as potential replacements are Marcus Thuram and Alexander Isak.

An Investment That Didn't Quite Pay Off:

Darwin Nunez's arrival at Liverpool generated considerable excitement. The striker was coming off a prolific goalscoring season at Benfica and was expected to be the perfect complement to Liverpool's attack, led by Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz. However, his adaptation to English football has not been straightforward. While he has shown flashes of his quality, with physical power, speed, and a good shot, inconsistency and a lack of clinical finishing have marked his time at Anfield.

The 85 million euros Liverpool paid for Nunez represented a significant gamble, making him one of the most expensive signings in the club's history. This high price tag placed additional pressure on the player, who has not performed at the expected level. The competition in Liverpool's attack, with players of the calibre of Salah, Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo, has also hindered his establishment as an undisputed starter.

A Desire for a Fresh Start:

Liverpool's decision to list Nunez for transfer suggests the club is seeking a change in their forward line. The Uruguayan's inconsistency and the need for a more clinical finisher have prompted the sporting director to look for alternatives in the market. This decision could also be influenced by the need to recoup some of the investment made in Nunez and free up wages for new signings.

Marcus Thuram and Alexander Isak: The Candidates to Replace Nunez:

The names most strongly linked to replacing Darwin Nunez are Marcus Thuram and Alexander Isak. Both strikers possess great potential and have demonstrated their quality in prominent leagues.

  • Marcus Thuram: The French striker, son of legendary defender Lilian Thuram, currently plays for Inter Milan. He has impressed both at club level and for the French national team. Thuram is a powerful, fast player with a good goalscoring record. His versatility allows him to play both as a centre-forward and a winger, making him an attractive option for Liverpool. However, as he is under contract with Inter, his signing would involve negotiations with the Italian club and the payment of a transfer fee.
  • Alexander Isak: The Swedish striker, currently playing for Newcastle United, is another name Liverpool are considering. Isak is a tall player with good technique and a keen eye for goal. His experience in the Premier League and his youth make him a solid prospect for the future. However, his signing could be more expensive, considering he is under contract with Newcastle.

What Would Thuram and Isak Bring to Liverpool?

Both Marcus Thuram and Alexander Isak could provide Liverpool with what they have lacked with Darwin Nunez: consistency and clinical finishing. Both strikers have a different profile to the Uruguayan, being more technical players with a greater ability to link up with teammates.

Thuram would bring power, speed, and versatility to Liverpool's attack, while Isak would offer height, technique, and a strong goalscoring instinct. The choice between one or the other will depend on the manager's priorities and the club's financial capabilities.
