On Matchday 2 of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League season, Moldovan side, FC Sheriff Tiraspol caused one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history. Sheriff were only playing in their second Champions league game when they travelled to 13-time champions, Real Madrid for a date at the Santiago Bernabeu. Despite their inexperience, they defeated the Spanish giants by two goals to one, through a stoppage-time winner from Sebastien Thill.

Since Sheriff's incorporation in 1997, the club side was not able to sign on foreign players until 2002 when Moldovan authorities relaxed the regulations to allow the club register foreign players. One of the first foreign players that the club signed was Panamanian forward, Roberto Brown. The forward signed for Sheriff in 2002 from numerous spells in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, and El Salvador.
