American soccer player Megan Rapinoe denounced the gender pay gap that exists in her country on Thursday in a ceremony she shared with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, at the White House. "I have been devalued, lacked in this regard and scorned because I am a woman (...) I continue to earn less than men who do the same work as me" she said Rapinoe, in a conference replicated by international media.
The Olympic champion 2012 and the world 2015 and 2019 graphed the wage discrimination with 18 cents less per dollar that a woman charges in relation to male players, a difference that amounts to 45 cents in the case of Latina soccer players. Rapinoe, 35, chosen as the best soccer player in the world in 2019 by FIFA and France Football magazine, was also accompanied by Sky Blue FC player Margaret Purce, who also joined in the salary claims.
"No one would expect a flower to thrive without water, and yet our society expects to see women in sports flourish, who have been denied water and sunlight", purce said on Pay Day. Igualitaria, which has been held since 1996.
The gender pay gap forces women in the United States to work between 15 and 22 months to receive the same salary as men in a year.
