This season has been difficult for Barcelona. They started their participation in La Liga and Champions League with the aim of improving their previous performance, when they had been champions of the Spanish league and had been eliminated from the European tournament in the group stage. The plan, then, was to repeat their success in La Liga and advance to the knock-out stages in the Champions League.

They were partly able to fulfill their wish, as they qualified for the round of 16 of the international tournament as leaders of Group H and will now face Napoli in the round of 16. But in the Spanish league they suffered heavy defeats against Real Madrid and Girona, which prevented them from approaching the top positions in the standings. Now, with 41 points, they are far from the top. These disappointing results were compounded by their failure in the Super Cup, where they lost the final 4-1 against Los Merengues.

All this sparked harsh criticism against the players, but above all against Xavi Hernández. The manager is questioned for his strategic decisions and lack of reaction to solve the team's problems. And some even go further and suggest that his time at Barcelona is over. In this scenario, the club's chiefs have assured on several occasions that they trust Xavi and that his future as coach is not at risk.

However, it seems that they already have a possible replacement in mind in case they have to look for another manager. According to Esport 3, sporting director Deco considers Thiago Motta to be an interesting option and is following his performances with Bologna closely. The Italian side are in seventh place in the Serie A standings, currently in the Conference League qualification zone.

He knows Barcelona

Thiago Motta played 146 games for Barcelona between 2001 and 2007, before moving to other European giants such as Atletico Madrid, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain. In addition, at the Catalan side he was a teammate of Deco and Xavi. His coaching career started in 2019 with Genoa, then he worked at Spezia and now he is managing Bologna.
