The FIFA regulations on player eligibility have opened an unexpected door for the Spanish national team. According to the current rules, there is a possibility that Spain could have two of the most famous sons of the world's football stars: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, it's not about the fathers themselves, but rather their sons: Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. and Thiago Messi. This is a unique scenario that, while still seeming distant, could become a reality in the coming years, especially with the focus on the 2030 World Cup, where Spain will be one of the hosts.
The FIFA regulations are clear about the requirements for a player to be called up by a country's federation, even if they were not born in that country. In this case, the requirement is that the player must have lived in the country of the federation for at least three years before reaching the age of 10.
Although Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 17, 2010, he meets this requirement. The eldest son of CR7 lived in Spain for several years, as his family resided in Madrid since his father joined Real Madrid in 2009, until they moved to Italy in 2018 when Cristiano signed for Juventus. Therefore, his time living in Spain makes him eligible to be considered by the Spanish national team.
On the other hand, Thiago Messi, the firstborn of Lionel Messi and Antonela Roccuzzo, automatically meets the residency requirement. He was born in Barcelona on November 2, 2012, meaning he has been a resident of Spain since birth. This allows him to be called up by the Spanish national team without any issues related to residency.
Although it is still early to make predictions, the truth is that Spain has a very attractive option for its future in international competitions. With Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. approaching 15 years old and Thiago Messi celebrating his 13th birthday in 2025, the Spanish national team could have these two young talents in their squad for the 2030 World Cup, where Spain will be the primary host, along with Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Portugal, and Morocco.
This possibility, although premature, could turn into a great advantage for Spanish football if these young players follow in their fathers' footsteps of success. Both have shown great skills in their youth categories, and although it is still uncertain how they will develop in the coming years, their potential is undeniable. For La Roja, having the sons of two of the greatest footballers in history could be an explosive combination.
The possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. and Thiago Messi being part of the Spanish national team has implications far beyond football itself. If this were to happen, it would not only affect the future of La Roja’s footballing performance but also generate significant media and commercial impact, with two of the most recognised surnames in the world of football. Matches of the Spanish national team would attract global attention, with the presence of the sons of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, two of the greatest icons in the history of the sport.
Of course, there is still much to be done before this idea becomes a reality. Both Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. and Thiago Messi still have a lot to prove in their respective careers, and the future is uncertain. However, there is no doubt that the possibility of Spain bringing them together on the same team is one of the most exciting options for the future of world football.
