For 32-year-old Wataru Endo, returning to his home country as a Liverpool player was a moment he'll never forget. The midfielder received a thunderous ovation from his compatriots as he entered the pitch in the second half of Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday. The occasion was made even more special when Virgil van Dijk, the player he replaced, handed him the captain's armband.

"It was an incredible moment for me because I came back to Japan as a Liverpool player," Endo told LiverpoolFC.com. "For me, it meant a lot. It was an amazing moment. "He expressed his deep gratitude to both his coach, Arne Slot, and Van Dijk for the gesture. "First of all, I really appreciate my coach and Virg for what they did for me. I think it was a great gesture. I think all Japanese people wanted me to be captain!"

The match was a family affair for Endo, with his entire family present to witness the special occasion. "All my family has come to see the game today, so I think they were very excited to see it today. I'm happy I could show this game to my family. They are happy."

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Versatility

Liverpool initially fell behind to the J1 League side in the 55th minute, but goals from Florian Wirtz, Trey Nyoni, and Rio Ngumoha secured a comeback victory in their final Asian pre-season tour match. Endo acknowledged the challenge posed by Yokohama, who are in mid-season form, stating, "Yokohama is in mid-season, so they are in full form. I think they played well, especially in the first half. It's not easy for us to beat them, but, of course, we had to show that we are Liverpool and we are Premier League champions. I'm happy with the result."

Reflecting on his past, Endo revealed a poignant connection to the Yokohama club. "I actually supported this club and went to a trial, but I couldn't join this club. Now I've come back here as a [Liverpool] player. It was a dream-come-true moment."

During the post-match press conference, Arne Slot revealed that Endo's solo introduction to the Nissan Stadium pitch was a reward for his selfless role in last season's Premier League title victory. Endo, who played the final half-hour as a center-back, emphasized his willingness to play wherever needed. "I don't mind where I play. I give 100 percent, even if I play as a No. 6, as a center-back or right-back," he said. "I played as a center-back when I was playing in Japan, so I don't mind what position I play and I always give 100 percent."

Endo's emotional return highlights not only his personal journey but also his dedication and versatility, qualities that clearly endeared him to both his teammates and his manager.
