Vinicius Jr. has achieved a lot at Real Madrid over the past six years at the club, but he has faced many terrible situations during his time in Spain. Vinicius has been a victim of racial abuse at opposition stadiums, and he faced a terrible incident last year at Valencia’s stadium, the Mestalla Stadium. Vinicius was very angry at certain fans in the stands as they were racially abusing him during a match. The Brazilian was very hurt by the incident and called them out to the referee, and he refused to play. Real Madrid released an official statement that read, “Real Madrid C.F. wishes to announce that the Court of Instruction No. 10 in Valencia has today, Monday 10 June 2024, passed a guilty verdict against the three young men accused of insulting, with shouts and racist gestures, our player Vinicius Junior during the league match held on 21 May 2023 at the Mestalla stadium between Valencia C.F. and Real Madrid C.F. The three defendants were found guilty of an offence committed in violation of the moral integrity of Vinicius Junior, which was aggravated due to racist motives, and each were ordered to serve eight months’ imprisonment and a two-year ban from football stadiums.”

The La Liga president, Javier Tebas, also spoke the ruling being a positive thing for La Liga. Tebas said, “This ruling is great news regarding the fight against racism in Spain, as it rectifies the wrong suffered by Vinícius Jr and sends a clear message to those people who go to a football stadium to hurl abuse. La Liga will identify them, report them and there will be criminal consequences for them.”

La Liga says the ruling is the first of its kind in Spain. Vinicius Jr. has been vocal about stopping racism not only in Spain but in the world. The Brazilian knows that he isn’t the only one who has suffered from the abuse, and he wants it to stop completely for him and other players.

Vinicius Jr’s reaction to the ruling

Vinicius Jr. gave his first words about the decision of the individuals facing prison time and a ban for two years from football stadiums. On X, he wrote, “Many asked me to ignore it; many others said that my fight was in vain and that I should just ‘play football.’ But, as I’ve always said, I’m not a victim of racism. I am a tormentor of racists. This first criminal conviction in the history of Spain is not for me. It’s for all black people. May other racists be afraid, ashamed and hide in the shadows. Otherwise, I’ll be here to collect. Thank you to La Liga and Real Madrid for helping with this historic conviction. More to come.”
