This Thursday, UTE issued a warning regarding the circulation of a fraudulent video that falsely invites people to invest, exploiting manipulated visuals of the company and well-known Uruguayan footballer Luis Suárez.
The company urged the public not to provide personal information under any circumstances, emphasizing the deceptive nature of the scam, which misuses altered images of a Telemundo reporter and the football icon to lend credibility to its claims.
In the fake video, viewers are presented with manipulated footage suggesting that UTE has launched a project aimed at resolving the financial issues of all Uruguayans. The scam falsely promises that an investment of 10,400 Uruguayan pesos can yield a monthly return of 175,000 pesos.
The video also features altered audio and visuals of Suárez, making it appear as though the athlete endorses the supposed investment opportunity. "UTE has developed a project that will solve the financial problems of all Uruguayans," claims the manipulated content, further aiming to deceive viewers with its fabricated messaging.
In an official statement, UTE categorically denounced the video, clarifying its fraudulent origins and urging customers to refrain from sharing any personal information.
"Faced with this new method of fraud, UTE wants to make it clear that the circulating information is of fraudulent origin and advises its customers not to provide any personal data," the statement read.
The company stressed that the video is heavily manipulated, warning users to remain vigilant against such scams and always verify the authenticity of any messages or promotions purportedly connected to UTE.
Scams leveraging the identities of reputable organizations and public figures have become increasingly sophisticated. By altering recognizable images and voices, such schemes aim to exploit trust and mislead individuals into parting with sensitive information or money.
In this case, the misuse of Luis Suárez’s likeness and voice underscores the lengths to which fraudsters will go to perpetrate these deceptions. Authorities and public organizations like UTE continue to advise caution and verification before engaging with unsolicited or suspicious content.
