The Spanish Super Cup remains the most anticipated curtain-raiser of the calendar year in Spanish football. Featuring the winners of LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, alongside the runners-up of both competitions, the tournament has evolved from a simple two-legged domestic affair into a global four-team spectacle. Since 2020, the competition has been famously relocated to Saudi territory as part of a strategic push to promote high-quality European football in Asia while maximizing marketing revenue in the Middle East.

As the 2026 edition unfolds, featuring giants like FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Athletic Bilbao, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has made a major announcement regarding the future of the tournament. The federation clarified that for the 2027 edition, the event will not take place in Saudi Arabia. Instead, the tournament will move to Qatar, a decision prompted by a significant scheduling conflict within the kingdom of Mohamed Bin-Salman next year.

The Reason Behind the Move: AFC Asian Cup Conflicts

According to the RFEF, currently led by Rafael Louzán, the temporary shift to Qatar is a matter of logistical necessity. Saudi Arabia is set to host the AFC Asian Cup during the same window typically reserved for the Spanish Super Cup, with the continental tournament scheduled to run from January 7 to February 5, 2027.

To avoid a clash of venues and resources, the RFEF has selected Qatar—host of the legendary 2022 FIFA World Cup—as the alternative stage. The primary setting for next year's edition will be Doha, the city where Lionel Messi and Argentina were crowned world champions. This move ensures that the tradition of hosting elite European football in the Middle East continues without interruption while utilizing Qatar’s state-of-the-art sporting infrastructure.

The Financial Logic: A Massive Boost for the "Pyramid"

The decision to keep the tournament abroad remains controversial among traditionalist fans in Spain, but the financial figures provided by the RFEF make a compelling case for the board. Rafael Louzán highlighted the stark contrast in revenue since the tournament changed its format and location.

"In 2018, when it was held in Morocco, the Super Cup generated one million euros. Now, by going to Saudi Arabia, it generates more than 50 million euros," Louzán explained. He further detailed that half of this revenue goes directly to the participating clubs, while approximately 26 million euros are funneled back into the "football pyramid"—supporting Spanish clubs at the national and grassroots levels that would otherwise struggle for funding.

Saudi Arabia’s Long-Term Commitment Until 2034

While the 2027 move to Qatar is a one-off exception, Saudi Arabia's grip on the competition is stronger than ever. The current contract between the RFEF and the Saudi kingdom runs until 2030, but reports in Spain suggest an agreement is already in place to extend this partnership until 2034. This long-term alliance is fueled by the immense economic benefits and Saudi Arabia's broader "Vision 2030" project, which aims to make the country a global hub for sports and entertainment.

The 2026 Edition: Current Outlook and Schedule

As for the current 2026 edition, the four participants currently battling in Saudi territory represent the elite of Spanish football. The lineup includes FC Barcelona (champions of both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey), Real Madrid (runners-up in both competitions), Atletico Madrid (third in LaLiga), and Athletic Club de Bilbao (fourth in LaLiga).

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 8, the world will stop for a Madrid Derby as Real Madrid takes on Atletico Madrid.
