Manchester United icon Roy Keane has weighed in on Marcus Rashford’s recent exclusion from the squad, suggesting that the forward may need to leave the club to rediscover his best form. Manager Ruben Amorim left both Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of the team for United’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, sparking widespread speculation about Rashford's future.
Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, Keane described Rashford’s omission as a significant decision by Amorim and a clear message to the player. “It’s a big call to leave him out of a derby,” Keane remarked. “He’s a local lad, and this game should mean more to him than anyone. But for those of us watching United recently, it’s not a huge surprise. His performances and attitude haven’t been where they need to be.”
Keane went on to highlight concerns about Rashford’s mentality, citing “off-the-field issues” and poor body language as recurring problems. “A new manager like Amorim will notice these things—how a player trains, how they interact with staff, and their work rate. Clearly, he’s seen enough to make this decision,” Keane said.
While Rashford has shown flashes of quality, the former United captain believes his inconsistent performances and lack of focus have hindered his development. “Quality isn’t enough at a big club like Manchester United,” Keane emphasized. “If your attitude isn’t right, it catches up with you.”
Despite scoring some key goals this season, Rashford’s overall contribution has been underwhelming. Keane believes a change of scenery could benefit both the player and the club. “He’s been at United for a long time and has done well, but maybe it’s time for a new challenge,” Keane suggested. “Sometimes, parting ways is the best thing for everyone.”
Amorim’s decision to drop Rashford, coupled with reports that the club is open to listening to offers for him in the January transfer window, adds weight to Keane’s assessment. “This might be the end for him at United,” Keane concluded. “But it could also be an opportunity for Rashford to start fresh somewhere else and prove himself again.”
