Roy Keane, the legendary Manchester United midfielder, is not always in the mood for autographs or selfies. His former teammate, Martin O’Neill, recently shared a comical story on The Overlap that illustrated just how unpredictable Keane’s responses can be, especially on a bad day.
O’Neill, who managed Keane during their time with the Republic of Ireland national team, recalled an amusing incident involving two young fans who sought Keane’s autograph while he was on the golf course. The situation, however, didn’t quite go as the teens had hoped.
According to O’Neill, the incident occurred while the two were playing golf at a hotel course, with Keane visibly frustrated as he struggled on a par 3 hole. “Roy was on his seventh shot, halfway down the fairway, clearly not happy,” O’Neill recounted.
Two young lads, around 14 or 15, had spotted Keane from a distance. Curious about the legendary figure, they approached O’Neill, asking if it was indeed Roy Keane. When O’Neill confirmed it was, the boys eagerly inquired if they could get his autograph. O’Neill, sensing the timing wasn’t right, advised them to wait until Keane had a better shot.
After watching Keane make his way to the green, the two fans took their chances and called out to him. Unfortunately, their request was met with a typical Keane response: "F*** off."
O’Neill, who laughed at the situation, later jokingly mentioned how the two fans were “mentally scarred” from the encounter. He even humorously claimed that when he met the boys the following year, they had just been released from a psychiatric unit.
Despite the stern response, O’Neill shared the moment with a smile, revealing the real Roy Keane behind the tough exterior.
