Lionel Messi, Barcelona's greatest legend, recently shared the reasons behind why he didn't return to the Catalan city after his time in Paris. In an interview where he reflected on his future and the decisions that have defined his career, Messi made it clear that, although he initially intended to return to his beloved Barcelona, circumstances changed drastically. "I wanted to go back to Barcelona and return to a place where I always dreamed of being, but it was no longer possible," he confessed, revealing the obstacles that arose along the way.
The Argentine star explained that after leaving Barcelona in 2021, his desire to return to the club remained a constant thought. The bond he had with the Camp Nou and the history he built there motivated him to pursue a return. However, both sporting and personal factors made that return increasingly difficult. The club's complex financial situation and the twists in the negotiations were key factors in why the move didn't come to fruition.
In his statements, Messi elaborated on how the final decision became more of a family matter. "From then on, it became a family decision." The well-being of his family became an absolute priority. The move of his family to the United States and their adjustment to life in Miami played a crucial role. For Messi, ensuring the stability and comfort of his family was far more important than any other offer, even that of Barcelona.
One surprising aspect was how his victory in the 2022 World Cup influenced his decision. "The fact that we won the World Cup also had a big impact." That title represented the culmination of a career filled with accomplishments, and it likely closed a chapter that many thought would continue in Europe. Achieving the long-awaited trophy made Messi reconsider his perspective on the future.
Messi made it clear that after fulfilling his World Cup dream, he no longer felt the need to return to Europe. "I was certain I didn’t want to play for any other European team, I didn’t want to go to any." These words show his shift in mindset. After living the most glorious years of his career at Barcelona, the idea of returning to such competitive demands no longer appealed to him.
Although his time at PSG was successful, both collectively and individually, it also left its mark. Adapting to a new team and context after so many years at just one club was not easy, and this experience contributed to changing his view of what he wanted for his future. After winning the World Cup, the idea of continuing his career in Europe faded, and he began to place more value on peace and personal well-being.
Finally, his arrival in the MLS and Inter Miami seems to have given him a fresh perspective on life outside Europe. Despite having lived the best years of his career at Barcelona, the period he enjoyed the most was the one where he could focus on his family and find a more relaxed environment. Football in America, with its different pace and demands, has allowed him to rediscover his passion for the sport without the constant pressure of Europe’s top clubs.
The decision not to return to Europe was one of the most difficult Messi had to make, but the conclusion was clear: "I didn’t want to play for any other European team." The World Cup victory allowed him to leave behind a burden he had carried for years, and he found in Miami a place where he could continue enjoying football without the pressures of European elite football. With a more mature mindset and the satisfaction of having achieved everything he dreamed of in his career, Messi continues his journey in the United States, proving that sometimes true peace is found far from the glory of European football.
Even though he didn’t return to Barcelona, his connection with the city and the club will always be special. No matter where he plays, Messi’s legacy at Barcelona will remain eternal, and his mark on football history will last forever.
