Real Madrid is reportedly kickin' the tires on some options to beef up their left-back situation, and the name Álvaro Carreras has popped up big time in the last few hours. According to the folks over at MARCA, the young Spanish defender, currently on loan at Benfica from Manchester United, has become a serious contender to fill that spot for the Whites.

Carreras, who's just 21, has been turning heads during his loan spell with Benfica, where he's shown some real defensive chops, isn't afraid to get forward, and looks pretty smooth on the ball. His youth and potential make him an attractive prospect for Real Madrid, who are supposedly lookin' for a left-back with a bright future who can push Ferland Mendy for playing time.

While Mendy's been solid when he's actually been healthy enough to play, his kinda spotty injury history has apparently got Real Madrid lookin' around for alternatives. Carreras, in that sense, could be a long-term solution, with the potential to lock down that left-back role for the Merengues for years to come.

Manchester United, who still hold Carreras's rights, might be open to cutting a deal, especially if Benfica decides not to trigger their option to buy the player outright. Real Madrid, for their part, would likely be willing to shell out a reasonable fee for the young defender, knowing his potential and the need to strengthen that particular position.

However, the competition for Carreras could be stiff. Several other European clubs have also reportedly thrown their hats in the ring for the player, drawn by his youth and his performances for Benfica. Real Madrid, though, might have the edge of being a more attractive destination, both in terms of prestige and financially, which could sway the kid's decision in their favor.

The final call on whether Carreras ends up at the Bernabéu will depend on a bunch of factors, including what the player wants, the negotiations with Manchester United, and what other clubs are willing to offer. But his name's definitely on Real Madrid's radar, and him rockin' the white jersey next season wouldn't be a total shocker in the upcoming transfer window.
