Sevilla FC has issued a statement reaffirming its condemnation of fraudulent behavior in sports following the ongoing investigation into defender Kike Salas, who was detained and later released in connection with an alleged illegal betting scheme. The club emphasized its commitment to judicial procedures and the presumption of innocence for the young footballer.
The club released a statement on Tuesday evening, asserting its position:"Sevilla FC, following the events involving our player Kike Salas, wishes to express its total respect for judicial processes and highlight its respect for the principle of presumption of innocence for our footballer."
The statement also underlined Sevilla’s stance on sports integrity:"Naturally, Sevilla FC condemns any fraudulent conduct in the world of sports, particularly those affecting the integrity of competition."
Sevilla sources indicated to EFE that the club is committed to gathering all relevant information before making any decisions. In the meantime, Salas will continue his regular activities as the investigation unfolds.
Kike Salas, an under-21 international for Spain, was detained on Tuesday after training. He was taken to the National Police station in his hometown of Morón de la Frontera in southern Spain.
A local court is investigating his alleged involvement in a betting scheme linked to yellow cards he reportedly forced during the closing stages of last season.
Alongside Salas, two other individuals—reportedly close associates who benefited from the betting activity—were also detained. All three were later released as suspects after having their phones cloned for evidence. Authorities estimate the fraud involved a sum of less than €10,000.
While the investigation continues, Sevilla has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of sports and awaits further developments. The club's measured response reflects its dual commitment to upholding ethical standards and supporting its player’s right to due process.
