Ruben Amorim admitted he was "really mad" after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool, despite the point earned at Anfield. The United head coach was visibly frustrated with his team’s failure to secure a victory, even after a strong performance. United took the lead early in the second half through Lisandro Martinez, but Liverpool responded with an equalizer from Cody Gakpo, followed by a penalty from Mohamed Salah. United, however, leveled the score late with Amad Diallo’s strike, salvaging a point for the visitors. Despite this, Amorim couldn't hide his disappointment, feeling that his team could have done more to secure all three points.
"Yes, because the expectations were so much different than what we saw during the game," Amorim told Sky Sports, explaining that his frustration stemmed from the team’s previous performances. "I think I get more mad because of the other games, so it's even harder to understand some things," he added, acknowledging the inconsistency that has plagued United this season.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes echoed Amorim's frustrations, questioning why his team is unable to consistently produce performances like the one against Liverpool. While Fernandes was pleased with the effort shown on the pitch, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the team's inability to replicate such intensity on a regular basis.
Amorim agreed with Fernandes' sentiment but emphasized that the issue wasn’t technical or tactical. "This is not about the system, it's not about the technique. It's about something else and this is hard to understand, even for the coach," Amorim said. He believes the team's mentality and competitiveness were key to the performance at Anfield, but stressed that the challenge going forward is to maintain that level of fight consistently.
Although Amorim acknowledged that the point at Anfield was deserved, he stated that the result still left him feeling unsatisfied. "It is just one point, and I think we should get mad and disappointed, more than the other day against Newcastle, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest – more than those days," Amorim explained. "Today we need to be really disappointed." Despite his frustration, he highlighted the importance of maintaining a competitive spirit in every match, not just against top-tier teams like Liverpool.
