Real Madrid fans, furious and ruthless with the players: they were booed at the Santiago Bernabéu
The incident occurred early in the match against Levante on Matchday 20 of La Liga.
The match between Real Madrid and Levante began in the most uncomfortable way possible at the Santiago Bernabéu. Before the kickoff, during the announcement of the starting lineups, the Spanish club's fans began to loudly whistle the players. Vinícius Jr and Jude Bellingham were the most affected by the situation, as they were the most criticized and, consequently, the crowd recriminated them with this act of disapproval.
Why did the fans whistle the Madrid players?
The reason for the discontent among the Madridista fans stems from the poor results Real Madrid has faced in recent fixtures. First, the defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final against FC Barcelona in Saudi Arabia—which resulted in the dismissal of manager Xabi Alonso—and subsequently, the shocking elimination by Albacete in the Copa del Rey Round of 16. These events triggered massive anger among the Merengue supporters, a situation accompanied by harsh criticism directed at Florentino Pérez.
As the stadium announcer began naming the starting XI, the fans started to vent their frustration toward the players and coaching staff. According to the newspaper Diario AS: "The tone rose higher and higher. The decibels fluctuated between 78 and 82%, but the ones who received the most were Jude Bellingham (82.5%) and, above all, Vinícius, who reached 83 decibels." However, the highest point of tension occurred when Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez was shown on the screens. The fans immediately expressed their discontent, and some supporters in the stadium began chanting "Florentino, resign," creating a highly awkward moment ahead of the clash with Levante.
Not the first time it has happened
The Santiago Bernabéu has always been a stage of contrasts, where Real Madrid has achieved the most important titles in its history, but also faced occasional humiliations. The fans are among the most demanding in the world; it doesn’t matter if the team won 5-0 in the previous game if they lose and play poorly in the next. Considering this, one of the most historic whistlings occurred during a Champions League match against Schalke 04. Although they qualified for the next round, the Spanish side lost at their home stadium, and the fans did not forgive them, leaving behind one of the most surprising images in the club's history.
A situation that must change
Álvaro Arbeloa’s team has no margin for error, and the interim coach is well aware of it. Having suffered two heavy blows in the Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, and currently sitting four points behind the leader, FC Barcelona (49), Real Madrid knows that dropping more points along the way would be tragic for the institution. Furthermore, the team is still competing in the Champions League, where they have yet to deliver their best performances.
