Premier League betrayal: Manchester United star who could leave for Arsenal

The Gunners need a top-level striker and they targeted him.

Arteta needs a forward.

This Thursday will close the transfer window in Europe's top leagues, so clubs have just a few hours to succeed in the negotiations they are holding to buy, sell and loan players. The objectives of each team vary according to their needs; some want to sign stars to raise the level of the squad, while others have to get rid of players to avoid financial fair-play problems.

Arsenal are one of the sides that intend to improve their squad and are therefore looking for a striker to fulfill Mikel Arteta's wishes. The Spanish coach has asked the club's chiefs to bring in a top centre-forward to compete with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah, and to allow them to keep up with other Premier League giants such as Manchester City and Liverpool.

One of the first targets had been Brentford striker Ivan Toney. But negotiations were difficult and the clubs failed to reach an agreement. In fact, Bees coach Thomas Frank said this week: "I think it's unlikely something will happen. Five per cent likely. I said before the Tottenham game that if we want a player now and it can't happen then it will happen in the summer. This will breaking news on Sky but Ivan Toney will stay."

With this scenario, The Gunners appear to have an even more ambitious plan B. According to Football Insider, their new target is Marcus Rashford. The English striker is one of Manchester United's biggest stars, but this season his performances have been disappointing and that was compounded by several off the field scandals. The most recent was last week, when he was absent from training after partying the night before in Belfast.

How much is he worth?

Last season Manchester United valued Marcus Rashford at almost $150 million. However, his declining performances and recent off-field scandals have probably driven his value down. In fact, the specialized website Transfermarkt valued the English striker at a much lower price: just $75 million.
