Manchester City is afraid of losing Pep Guardiola, and the time of his tenure is soon coming to an end. His contract expires in the summer of 2025, and despite the club willing to offer him a new deal, the Spanish manager may not accept and leave the club next year. Guardiola has been fundamental in the club’s recent success as they have won multiple Premier League trophies and have won the Champions League for the first time in its history. With Guardiola certain to go, Man City is willing to search for the next top manager who can continue to win trophies with them. Steve Kay reports that Man City reportedly wants Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to replace Pep Guardiola in 2025. Alonso reportedly earns $6.4 million at Bayer Leverkusen, while Guardiola earns around $21.6 million at Man City. Alonso could be earning more than what he earns at Leverkusen but could be less than Guardiola’s salary. Alonso being offered more than $12 million may convince him to join the club next year.

Alonso impressed this past season with Bayer Leverkusen as they won the Bundesliga by going undefeated and winning a double. Bayer Leverkusen played a total of 53 matches under Alonso this past season, and they secured 43 wins, nine draws, and only one loss. Their only loss throughout the season was the 3-0 loss in the Europa League Final against Atalanta.

The Spanish manager was chased by Liverpool and Bayern Munich a couple of months ago after Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from the Reds, and Thomas Tuchel agreed to part ways with Bayern Munich at the end of the season. Alonso announced that he will stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season, and now Liverpool and Bayern Munich have new managers for next season. Liverpool appointed Arne Slot, and Bayern appointed Vincent Kompany.

The club that also wants to appoint Xabi Alonso

Not only does Manchester City want to appoint Xabi Alonso soon, but Real Madrid as well. The Champions League winners are thriving under Carlo Ancelotti, and the Italian’s contract expires in the summer of 2026. Despite his success, Real Madrid wants Alonso to be his successor. Alonso was a former Real Madrid player, and he would be open to becoming their head coach.
