Many Ronaldo fans claim that the Portuguese influenced many world-class players to join the Saudi Pro League last summer. Players like Karim Benzema and Neymar left Europe at the highest level to join Ronaldo in the league. Ronaldo, in his first few days in Saudi Arabia, believed in the potential of the league and expressed that it could become competitive. Ronaldo said it could battle with the European leagues in the future and has recently spoken about the league being better than the French league. This comment caused lots of controversy, and some did not believe the Portuguese when he said that.

Ronaldo said, "Saudi League is not worse than the French League [Ligue 1]. Saudi Pro League is more competitive than Ligue 1; I can say that after one year spent there. We are better than the French League already now."

Ronaldo also spoke about the improvements it needs to become the best league in the world. The Portuguese says, "There are many factors which apply to improve the league. As I said before, they have many things to improve. But I think with powerful people behind us to help change a little bit the culture of football and the bad habits, I think we're going to reach a point where the people in Saudi Arabia will be proud. The investment there is huge. So why not believe it? In Saudi, even in Dubai, things change and the world has changed, so they deserve opportunities."
