In a recent interview with TheGrefg's YouTube channel, Neymar Jr. addressed one of the most discussed nicknames of his career: "the prince who didn't want to be king." This nickname started circulating after his surprising departure from FC Barcelona in 2017 to join PSG, when many speculated that Neymar wanted to shine on his own, away from the shadow of his friend Leo Messi. However, the Brazilian forward made it clear that the story is not as many have painted it.
Neymar explained that the reason he never aspired to be considered the "king of football" is because, for him, that title already belongs to Pelé. With humility and admiration, the Brazilian star stated: "It's not that I didn't want to be king, it's that for me, there is only one king, and it's Pelé". Neymar made it clear that he does not feel overshadowed by other greats but rather deeply respects Pelé's legacy as the greatest figure in Brazilian and global football history.
This comment reflects Neymar's respect for the football legend, acknowledging Pelé as the ultimate standard, which shows his respect for the sport's history and his own humility in positioning himself within that narrative.
Throughout his career, Neymar has faced numerous challenges, with injuries being one of the most significant. In the same interview, he reflected on how these injuries have deeply affected him, both physically and mentally. "A lot has happened, I’ve had many injuries that cost me a lot, and well, God wanted it that way," Neymar said.
One of the most memorable moments was the knee injury inflicted by Camilo Zúñiga during the 2014 World Cup, which kept him out of the competition at a crucial moment. In 2023, he suffered another serious injury with his new team, Al-Hilal, tearing his ligaments, bringing his total to 33 injuries, which have kept him off the pitch at key moments.
These physical setbacks have not only impacted his performance but also the way many perceive him. Despite everything, Neymar remains strong and positive, accepting that each obstacle is part of his journey and that it has been a life lesson to keep moving forward.
In summary, Neymar does not seek to be the "king" of football but prefers to recognise the greatness of those who came before him, while continuing to build his own legacy in the sport.
