Portugal's campaign at EURO 2024 came to an end last week as they drew 0-0 against France in the quarterfinals but lost 5-3 in the penalty shootout. Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal wanted to go all the way since their squad was one of the best in the whole tournament. Ronaldo has just played his last European Championship with the Portuguese national team and didn't manage to score a goal in the competition. Some Portuguese fans felt disappointed, while others were satisfied with the efforts of the team. A person who expected more is Jose Mourinho, the new coach of Fenerbahce. The Portuguese manager has been linked to coaching Ronaldo again but instead opted to coach in Turkey. When asked about Portugal at the EUROS, Mourinho said, "I expected more from the Portugal national team. There was no development from the team during the tournament, and it was not a convincing team. But it is a young team, apart from the duo Cristiano and Pepe, it is a young team, they have years to come.” It doesn't seem that a Ronaldo and a Mourinho reunion is possible anytime soon.

Mourinho was expected to take the Portugual national team job if they did poorly, but now, with him at Fenerbahce, it seems impossible to see the 'Special One' to coach Ronaldo again. Mourinho continued to talk about predicting Portugal not doing well at the EUROS. Mourinho said, "Portugal did not perform well during the tournament despite reaching the round of 16.”

The Portuguese manager was not convinced with the team before the tournament after watching the Croatia vs Portugal friendly match, which ended 2-1 for the Croatians. Mourinho said, "When I attended the Portugal-Croatia match before the Euros, the match did not smell good. I did not get any positive feelings."

Is Cristiano Ronaldo playing in the 2026 World Cup?

Despite the elimination from the EUROS and being 39 years old, Ronaldo is reportedly still open to playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is two years away. The Portuguese legend's contract with Al Nassr expires in the summer of 2025 and could be offered a contract extension. Ronaldo would be 41 during the 2026 World Cup.
