Salah was confirmed to miss the next two games for Egypt in the AFCON Cup, and his national team is currently second in their group with Cape Verde, Ghana, and Mozambique. Egypt drew 2-2 with Mozambique in their first game of the tournament. Salah scored a crucial last-minute penalty to save Egypt a point. He also got an assist in the game and needed to win the next game against Ghana.

Before Salah would try to help his national team beat Ghana, he would get injured minutes before the halftime whistle. The game ended in another 2-2 draw for the Egyptians, who are placed second. Now Egypt, without Salah, will play 1st place team, Cape Verde. Cape Verde won their two games and are advancing to the next round. Egypt will need a draw or a win to have a chance at advancing to the next round. Salah's injury will keep him out of the first knockout game if Egypt does make it out of the group.
