Jude Bellingham is one of the top earns in La Liga as he reportedly earns $130 million a year. Referees are arguably the most important people in the game of football, but they are also the most disliked. Whether it is a mistake on their part or the VAR, football fans and players do get over the top with their relations with the officials. Referees are essential to the sport, but their salaries are nowhere near that of the players on the pitch. Many assume that the best-paid referees are in the top five European leagues as they are the most watched in the world. A new list from The Athletic reported a comparison between the salaries of MLS referees and referees from the top five European leagues.

The lowest earner out of the top five European leagues is the Bundesliga. According to the Atheltic, the lowest salary for referees in the Bundesliga is $65,780. The highest salary in the German league is $88,635. In Ligue 1, the lowest salary for referees is $83,810, and the highest salary is worth $84,240. The Serie A referee's lowest salary is $96,708, and the highest salary possible in that league is $97,200.

The number jumps tremendously when it comes to the Premier League. The lowest salary a Premier League referee could earn is $92,490. The highest earner in the Premier League for referees earns $186,000. That salary is the best paid out of any league. The MLS has a higher starting salary than the Premier League, as the lowest salary for those referees is $125,000. The highest referee salary in the MLS is $165,000.

All La Liga referees earn a fixed annual salary

The Athletic reports that all La Liga referees earn a fixed annual salary of $157,115, and they receive around $5,330 per match and $2,664 if they operate VAR. They also get an extra $27,802 annually for image rights.
