Without Lionel Messi, Argentina defeated El Salvador and Costa Rica quite comfortably in the friendlies that took place in the United States. Argentina is scheduled to have another friendly just days before the Copa America starts. Argentina will play Guatemala on June 14th, and their Copa America opening match will be on June 20th against Canada.

One of Messi's teammates who played in one of the friendly matches this past international break was goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The World Cup champion spoke in an interview with D Sports Radio about his time with the national team and his thoughts on winning the World Cup trophy in Qatar in 2022. Martinez played in the 3-0 win against El Salvador, where he made one save. Despite the win, Martinez was not satisfied with the level of opponents Argentina had been facing. Martinez said, "No disrespect to El Salvador, but we would have liked to play against a world's top country; we needed a great game in Europe against England or Spain or whoever."

Emiliano Martinez's thoughts on his World Cup win now

Emiliano Martinez was asked how he felt when he won the World Cup in Qatar for Argentina. Martinez said, "I don't remember who said it on the plane from Qatar to Rome. But he told us: 'Do you realize that we are immortal? Now no one can take the star from you. Years go by, everyone is going to die, and the star is the one who follows.' Even if 180 years pass, they will continue to remember you. That's the beauty of football. They will remember you forever.' Realizing exact that was a shock after the World Cup, it was difficult to sleep thinking about it."
