All eyes will be on Lionel Messi this Saturday as he leads Inter Miami into their highly anticipated debut at the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup. The legendary Argentine, already a fan favorite, is poised to uncork the tournament at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with a captivating clash against Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly. This match marks the first of 63 encounters culminating in the final on July 13th in New Jersey.
Inter Miami enters this prestigious global competition as the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield winner, having clinched the title for the best team in the regular season. They face a formidable challenge, drawn into a demanding group that also includes Portuguese giants Porto and Brazilian heavyweights Palmeiras.
Messi's influence on Inter Miami has been nothing short of transformative. The Argentine maestro, who turns 38 on June 24th, has enjoyed a sensational season so far, already netting ten goals and providing six assists in just thirteen MLS appearances. His exceptional performances earned him the MLS MVP award for 2024, following a dominant season with 21 goals and 18 assists. His current form, including five goals that earned him the "Player of the Month" title, has fans buzzing with anticipation to see the eternal Argentine captain light up the Club World Cup stage.
Inter Miami's squad is bolstered by a constellation of footballing legends. Coach Javier Mascherano's roster features global icons such as Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, whose season has seen its ups and downs but has recently surged with three goals in his last two matches, alongside Spanish midfield maestros Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Their opponents, Al Ahly, arrive in Miami with an equally impressive pedigree. The Egyptian club are the reigning CAF Champions League champions, having secured a remarkable hat-trick of titles in 2020-21, 2022-23, and 2023-24. They face the tournament with a new face at the helm: Spanish coach José Riveiro. Riveiro took charge after Marcel Koller's dismissal in late April, bringing extensive experience from Spain, Finland, and South Africa, where he notably won five trophies leading Orlando Pirates.
This opening match promises a thrilling spectacle, pitting Messi's star-studded Inter Miami against the formidable African champions, setting a high bar for the rest of the Club World Cup.
