Javier Mascherano, head coach of Inter Miami, assured this Friday that Lionel Messi will be available for the team’s upcoming friendly match against Sporting San Miguelito in Panama City this Sunday. The Argentine legend is reportedly in excellent condition and following the team’s planned preseason schedule.

"Leo is doing very well, just as we had planned. The idea in the first game was to give him 60 minutes, and on Wednesday, we wanted to increase that to nearly 70 minutes, knowing we had another match four days later," Mascherano stated during a press conference at Inter Miami’s training facility.

Gradual Preparation for the Season

Messi has already played two preseason matches with Inter Miami:

  • 66 minutes against Club América (Mexico) in a match that ended in a penalty shootout win for Inter Miami, where he also scored a goal.
  • 73 minutes in a 0-0 draw against Universidad de Deportes (Peru).

Mascherano emphasized that the objective is to maximize playing time for all players, ensuring they build match fitness before the season begins.

Upcoming Fixtures and Transfer Plans

Inter Miami, featuring Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, will travel to Panama on Saturday, followed by a match against CD Olimpia in Honduras on February 8 and a final preseason test against Orlando City on February 14 in Tampa, Florida.

Mascherano also confirmed that the club is still actively seeking reinforcements, with the MLS transfer window open until April 23.

"The market is long, we know we have until the end of April. We don’t want to rush, but we are definitely expecting a few more signings," Mascherano concluded.
