Manchester United have had many problems this season. The team's performances, especially at the start of the Premier League and Champions League, were disappointing and that prevented them from competing with the top teams in England and Europe. Fans and the press pointed to coach Erik Ten Hag as the main responsible for those failures, but there were other reasons as well.

The Red Devils had serious problems in attack, mainly due to the low level of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Rasmus Hojlund, as well as the quarrel between the manager and Jadon Sancho that ended with the winger's departure to Borussia Dortmund. And at the other end of the field there were also problems: many of the squad's defenders suffered injuries that prevented them from being available for some time.

Lisandro Martinez, the team's top defender, was almost unable to play. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Raphael Varane also had physical problems, making Ten Hag's task very difficult. That's why the club's chiefs are considering signing more than one defender in the next transfer window, to make sure those problems won't be repeated in the 2024/25 season.

The chosen ones appear to be in Germany. According to Manchester Evening News, the English side have targeted a pair of defenders from Bayer Leverkusen, the surprise Bundesliga leaders who at the weekend beat Bayern Munich 3-0 and took a key step towards the German league title. They are Jeremie Frimpong (23) and Edmond Tapsoba (25), two players who have shown a great level under coach Xabi Alonso.

It will not be an easy negotiation

Manchester United are looking for Frimpong to take Aaron Wan-Bissaka's place at right-back, while Tapsoba would be an alternative to the possible departure of Johnny Evans and Raphael Varane. The problem is that Bayer Leverkusen will not let them go easily and will ask for both for an amount close to $125 million.
