Manchester United chase after world class center back for next season

Over the weekend, Manchester United got an intense draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. The team is currently 7th in the Premier League with 32 points. They are 8 points behind 4th place Arsenal and are desperate to get there for a spot in next year's Champions League. The game against Spurs saw the return of Lisandro Martinez.

Martinez’s last game for United was back in September, in the 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League. Varane has started to play more often along with Jonny Evans because of Harry Maguire's injury. The French defender did not see minutes when Maguire was available. The English defender’s comeback is still unknown since the player suffered an injury in December.

Maguire’s last game with United was the 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in the last Champions League group stage game. United is desperate to improve and add depth in that position. The Red Devils are glad to have Martinez back and will have to wait for Lindelof, who is also on the injury list. The Swedish defender is rumored to come back in February. With Evans at 36 years old and rumors of Lindelof and/or Varane leaving the club, Ten Hag will hope to reunite with an old player of his.

De Ligt is a transfer target Manchester United are looking to complete in the summer transfer window.

Matthijs De Ligt has become a top priority signing for Manchester United in the summer. The Dutch defender is currently unhappy about his playing situation with Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, has played Upamecano and Kim as the two main center-backs of the team. Bayern are also interested in bringing in FC Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.

Man United manager Erik Ten Hag wants to bring his former player to Old Trafford. If the Dutch manager manages to stay in charge of United, De Ligt could become the first player the Red Devils will look to sign. De Ligt’s contract with Bayern ends in 2027, but the player’s impatience and lack of playing time can convince the player to move to Old Trafford.
