This past Monday, Manchester Cathedral hosted a moving tribute to Kath Phipps, who spent more than 50 years serving Manchester United as a receptionist. Phipps, who passed away at 85, became a beloved figure within the club, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The service brought together club members, players, coaches, and football legends, including Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham, who shared warm memories of Phipps. From her welcoming presence at Old Trafford to her dedication at Carrington, her impact on the United family extended far beyond her professional role.

A Familiar Face at Old Trafford and Carrington

Kath Phipps began her career at Manchester United in 1968 as a switchboard operator. Over time, she became a familiar face, greeting players, staff, and fans at the Directors' Box at Old Trafford and later serving as receptionist at the Carrington training ground. Her warmth and dedication made her a cherished figure throughout the club.

David Beckham, deeply affected by her passing, spoke of her unwavering support since his arrival at the club at the age of 15. “She was the heartbeat of Manchester United. From the first day to the last, she kept her promise to my parents to look after me. Old Trafford will never be the same without her smile,” Beckham shared on social media.

An Emotional and Reverent Tribute

The ceremony included a heartfelt reading by Sir Alex Ferguson, who paid tribute to his longtime friend and colleague. Attendees included head coach Ruben Amorim, first-team players like Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martínez, and women’s team representatives, including captain Maya Le Tissier and Ella Toone.

Defender Jonny Evans, who knew Phipps since his days in the academy, honored her with a special reading. Club legends such as Mark Hughes, Denis Irwin, and Roy Keane also joined the tribute, reflecting on the invaluable role Kath played within the Manchester United family.
