Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paquetá can finally breathe a sigh of relief. British justice has found him innocent of match-fixing allegations, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to support the claims. This verdict allows Paquetá to embark on a new season free from the immense burden that has overshadowed his career for months.

The Football Association (FA) brought charges against Paquetá in May 2024, citing "four counts of match-fixing and two of obstructing an investigation." This stemmed from over 60 irregular bets placed across four West Ham matches between 2022 and 2023. The FA alleged that Paquetá deliberately sought bookings in these games to manipulate betting markets, even pushing for a "lifetime ban" – a historic punishment.

Throughout the entire process, both the player and his agency, Roc Nation, steadfastly maintained his innocence. They collaborated fully with the authorities, despite what they described as "poor treatment," and even enlisted the services of the country's top criminal lawyer. It was a harrowing ordeal for Paquetá, marked by moments of genuine distress, including tears after receiving a booking in a Premier League match last season. However, he remained surrounded by the unwavering support of his family, particularly his wife, influencer Duda Fournier, and his club, West Ham. Graham Potter, the Hammers' coach, even publicly declared, "He is a brilliant player and, as a club, we have supported him throughout the entire process."

Paquetá's Relief and Gratitude

In a statement released on West Ham's website, Paquetá expressed his immense relief: "From the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these very serious accusations. I cannot say anything more at this moment, but I want to express my gratitude to God and my desire to return to playing football with a smile. To my wife, who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always encouraged me, and to my family, friends, and the legal team that has supported me: thank you for everything."

While Paquetá is now free to continue his career with West Ham, the long-term implications of this saga on his future at the club remain to be seen. It's unclear how long he will stay with the team, but for now, the talented midfielder can focus solely on football.
