Liverpool manager Arne Slot has heaped praise on Colombian winger Luis Díaz, describing him as a "special player" for the club.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Girona, Slot was effusive in his assessment of Díaz. "I'm very happy with Luis Díaz in the time I've been here," the Dutchman said. "Excellent work rate, great feet, and he scores goals. He's a special player for us."

When asked about Díaz's position and the competition he faces from Cody Gakpo for a starting spot, Slot explained, "Both have started many times, Díaz and Cody, but the other two have done well too. It's healthy competition between Díaz and Gakpo. Our fans have seen Luis as a '9' this season." He added, "In the last five or six weeks, we've had four players for three positions, so we've mainly rotated the left position and the '9' position, and the right-wing is mainly Mo Salah."

Díaz is expected to start for Liverpool in their trip to Spain. The Reds are already guaranteed a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, having won all five of their group games so far. Girona, on the other hand, face an uphill battle to qualify.

Liverpool come into the game on the back of a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid.
