On January 4, President Joe Biden hosted a ceremony at the White House to honor a distinguished group of individuals with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. Among the honorees was Lionel Messi, whose presence in the U.S. has significantly elevated the profile of Major League Soccer (MLS) and inspired millions worldwide.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States. Messi’s impact on the sport of soccer, particularly in boosting the MLS, was a key factor in the league achieving record-breaking attendance and viewership in 2024.
Beyond his contributions on the field, Messi has also left a mark in philanthropy through the Messi Foundation, which supports education and healthcare initiatives globally. As a UNICEF ambassador, the 37-year-old footballer has consistently used his platform to advocate for children’s rights.
In addition to Messi, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson was also honored during the ceremony. This recognition makes Messi the second footballer ever to receive the medal, following U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe. Other legendary athletes who have been awarded include Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Simone Biles, and Tiger Woods.
Although Messi could not attend the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts, he expressed his gratitude in a letter sent through Inter Miami’s communications team. The letter read:
“Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House expressing his deep honor and immense privilege in receiving this recognition. He explained that prior commitments prevented him from attending the ceremony but expressed his gratitude for the gesture. He also mentioned his hope to meet with President Biden in the near future.”
Messi’s influence in the U.S. has gone far beyond soccer. Since joining Inter Miami, his presence has not only improved the league’s global appeal but also highlighted the potential of sports to unite people and promote cultural exchange. His contributions to philanthropy and social causes have further solidified his status as a global icon.
