Lionel Messi and Inter Miami seem to be the new attraction in football as many opposition fans want to see them play against their teams. The MLS viewership has increased a lot since Messi joined last summer, and the stadiums are sold out regardless of whether Messi and Inter Miami play away from home. Like Hong Kong earlier this year, Messi upsets fans as he will not be playing in a game for Inter Miami away from home. Messi did not travel with the Inter Miami team for the match against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The BC Place was sold out in anticipation of Messi, but the fans were furious to find out that he stayed in Miami to rest and to host the start of the Youth International Cup, where his son Thiago Messi was playing.

The Vancouver Whitecaps will play Inter Miami at the BC Place, which is sold out and will have more than 54,000 fans. The Canadian fans are angry and disappointed that Messi will not be in the match tonight. It aggravates them more to know that Messi is not injured, which is a reasonable excuse not to show up.

Axel Schuster, the Whitecaps Vancouver CEO, wrote a statement in regard to this issue. Schuster wrote, “While we haven’t received an official update on the availability of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets for this weekend, we understand they will not make this trip. Unfortunately, we have no control over who plays for our opponent, and it was important for us to communicate to our fans as soon as possible.”

When Messi angered Hong Kong for not playing

Inter Miami had an international friendly tour this February before the start of the MLS season. The team traveled to Hong Kong for a friendly against the Hong Kong League XI, but Messi couldn’t play due to an injury. Thousands of fans were disappointed to see the Argentine not playing. Messi suffered an injury and didn’t want to risk it, despite playing a few days before in Japan in another friendly. Messi apologized and said, “I hope that one day we will have the opportunity to come back and give our best to our fans and friends in Hong Kong.”
