The disallowed penalty of Julian Alvarez in the UEFA Champions League continues to spark debate, and one of the first to notice the mistake was none other than Sergio "Kun" Aguero. During ESPN’s live broadcast, the former Argentina striker immediately realised that Alvarez had touched the ball twice before scoring.
The incident occurred in the final moments of the match when the referee, after a VAR review, ruled out the goal due to a double touch from the Manchester City forward. While many missed it at first, Aguero spotted it right away.
Watching the replay, Aguero reacted in surprise and pointed it out:
Aguero: “Oh, did he touch it with both legs?”
His co-commentator initially dismissed the idea:
Colleague: “If he had, they would have ruled it out.”
But Aguero, with his keen footballing eye, insisted and confirmed the mistake:
Aguero: “Oh, God, he did. I saw it.”
Aguero’s quick reaction caught fans’ attention, as he spotted the error before many others. Moments later, VAR intervened, prompting the referee to review the footage and ultimately disallow Alvarez’s goal, confirming what the former Argentina star had already seen.
According to FIFA’s Laws of the Game, specifically Law 14.1, a penalty must be disallowed if the taker touches the ball twice in succession without another player making contact.
In Alvarez’s case, his standing foot made slight contact with the ball just before he struck it, causing a double touch—unintentional but enough to void the goal.
The referee’s decision has divided opinions. Some argue that the touch was minimal and should not have been penalised, while others insist that the law is clear and must be applied consistently.
This moment once again highlights Kun Aguero’s sharp footballing mind. His experience as a striker allows him to notice details that others might miss, as seen in this Julian Alvarez incident.
