Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham has broken his silence following his controversial red card against Osasuna. The England international has insisted that a "misunderstanding" with the referee led to his dismissal, and he has appealed to the football authorities to review the incident.
Speaking after the match, Bellingham explained that he had not intended to disrespect the referee and that his words had been misinterpreted. "It's clear that a mistake has been made, there's been a misunderstanding," he said. "I don't want to repeat what I said, but it was something along the lines of 'fuck' and I want everyone to know that I didn't want to put the team in a position where I'd leave them with ten men. If you watch the video, you can see it's not the same as what's written in the report, I hope the federation takes that into account."
The midfielder further emphasised that he had not directed any insults towards the referee. "I haven't insulted anyone, you can clearly see it in the video, I don't even say it directly to the referee, I say it to myself. It was a misunderstanding, a clear mistake by the official."
Bellingham's comments have sparked a debate among fans and pundits, with some arguing that he was harshly treated by the referee, while others believe that his actions warranted a red card. The Football Federation will now have to review the incident and decide on the appropriate punishment.
The incident has raised questions about the role of VAR in football and the importance of clear communication between players and officials. It also highlights the pressure that young players are under to perform at the highest level and the potential consequences of a moment of frustration.
