As the Catholic Church begins a new chapter under Pope León XIV, also known as Robert Prevost, more details about the personal side of the new pontiff continue to emerge. Among the many curiosities surrounding his profile, one particular detail has caught public attention: his favourite sport. And surprisingly, it's not football, the game followed by billions around the globe.
In an interview given in September 2023 to the emeritus archbishop of Chiclayo, the now Pope openly shared his love for tennis. “I consider myself a big fan of tennis,” he stated with genuine enthusiasm, offering a rare glimpse into his personal interests. His words quickly gained traction, especially after his proclamation as the 267th Pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
Born in the United States and having spent more than forty years in Peru, Prevost has always maintained a humble and approachable image. During the same interview, he reflected on the challenges of maintaining his tennis routine. “Since I left Peru, I’ve had few chances to play,” he said, “so I’m looking forward to getting back on the court, although my new job hasn’t left me much free time so far,” he added with a laugh.
His remarks have resonated widely, especially with those who appreciate seeing a human and relatable side of the papacy. In a world where spiritual leaders are often perceived as distant figures, León XIV’s candid words offer a refreshing contrast and help forge a closer connection with people around the world.
Although football remains the dominant sport in Latin America—and among many of his faithful—his passion for tennis highlights the diverse background and personality he brings to the Vatican. It also reflects a broader trend of modern popes engaging with global culture in new ways.
For many, especially in Peru where he lived and worked for decades, this revelation only adds to the affection felt towards him. It serves as a reminder that spiritual leaders, too, enjoy hobbies and face the same struggles to find time for them as anyone else.
Whether or not he picks up a racket again anytime soon, one thing is certain: Pope León XIV has already won hearts with his honesty, simplicity, and the sport he chose to cherish.
