Real Madrid is heading into a summer transfer window that could bring significant changes to the squad. Beyond the expected signings, the club’s immediate priority is to decide who stays and who leaves. The sporting department is facing multiple challenges and will need to make crucial decisions that could shape the beginning of a new era.
One of the main areas of focus is on players whose contracts expire on 30 June. This includes Ferland Mendy, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez. In Mendy’s case, reports suggest there is already a verbal agreement in place for an extension, although nothing has been made official yet. His performance this season has been solid and could be enough to secure his spot in the future squad.
Things look different for Modric and Lucas. The Croatian, a living legend at the club, has gradually lost his place in the starting XI, and his continuity seems more sentimental than strategic. Lucas, meanwhile, has served as a useful squad player, but with Arda Guler emerging as a versatile option and either Joshua Kimmich or Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to reinforce the right flank, his role may no longer be necessary.
Should all three leave, the club would need to strengthen both left-back and midfield positions. The right-hand side already seems covered for the coming season.
Beyond the expiring contracts, Real Madrid are also open to the idea of letting go players who are still under contract, if their performance is not deemed sufficient. With the squad showing signs of stagnation at key moments this season, the need for a “fresh start” feels more urgent than ever.
David Alaba is the name that comes up most often in this context. The Austrian has been out for over a year due to a serious injury and is struggling to regain full match fitness. Despite having a valid contract, offers from Saudi Arabia could represent a good opportunity for both the player and the club. Madrid would save on a high salary and free up space to sign a younger, more dynamic centre-back.
Eduardo Camavinga has also fallen short of expectations this season. Despite his immense talent and versatility, his performances have been inconsistent and well below his best level. The club still has faith in him, but a substantial offer could change the picture.
In attack, Rodrygo’s name is regularly linked with a move to the Premier League. Though the Brazilian has been crucial in previous campaigns, this season has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Depending on how the season finishes, the club could see him as a valuable asset to sell and reinvest in the squad.
Of course, these decisions are not limited to the players alone. Carlo Ancelotti’s future is not entirely set in stone either. While he recently signed an extension until 2026, a disappointing end to the season—especially without major silverware—could lead the club to reconsider.
Florentino Perez and his team know that Madrid need a younger, more competitive and ambitious squad. While the market will offer chances to add quality, building a title-winning side also means knowing when to let go.
