The Saudi League caused a huge shift in football last summer when they went after the biggest stars in Europe to try and attract them over to the league. It was a shift that started with Cristiano Ronaldo heading over to the league to join Al Nassr after his departure from Manchester United. That was the first piece of the puzzle, but no one expected them to attract the number of players that they have been able to.

The league was seriously linked with Lionel Messi, until the superstar ended up choosing MLS and Inter Miami. While they were snubbed by Messi, that did not stop the determination to get football’s biggest names. They were able to bring in the likes of Karim Benzema, Ngolo Kante, Sadio Mane, and Riyadh Mahrez. Some of the biggest names in football were coming and at a very successful rate.

The biggest grab after Ronaldo was the acquisition of Neymar by Al-Hilal. Messi and Ronaldo are the two biggest names in the world when it comes to football, but a close third is Neymar, which meant Saudi had two of the three most popular footballers in the world. A big chunk of their goal was successful. But it wasn’t just about signing superstars, teams had to get good complementary pieces on top of the superstars.

You had the likes of Ruben Neves, Gabi Veiga, Alex Telles, and more recently Renan Lodi join the league as well to help the stars. Al Nassr have been in the market recently as well lately looking for more defensive help to help them as they look to close the gap on Al-Hilal who are in first place. The gap is 7 points with 15 games.
