During the last few years, there have been several cases of much controversy and legal problems that involve or involved elite players in world soccer. Perhaps the best known case was that of Dani Alves, former FC Barcelona player who was accused and sentenced for abuse of a woman, for which he was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison.

However, there have also been other cases with different accusations against soccer players. For example, a couple of weeks ago it was announced that Paul Pogba, who was once one of the best players in the world, was suspended for 4 years from all activities related to professional soccer because he tested positive in an anti-doping control. In addition, there are also the cases of Benjamin Mendy, accused of abuse, and Quincy Promes, who was arrested and sentenced to 7 and a half years in prison for drug trafficking.

Undoubtedly, these are very delicate situations that many soccer players avoid talking about, but that is not the case of Memphis Depay, former Barcelona player and current player of Atletico Madrid and the Netherlands national team. Depay, known for being a player who does not shut up about anything he thinks, has shown his support on social networks towards Quincy Promes, which has earned him a lot of criticism and questioning.

"I don't know the Quincy Promes that is prosecuted. He will remain my friend, and you don't leave your friends behind. It's not that I support him, but I won't leave him behind (...) I don't come from an easy environment. If people read my book, they will understand. Dani Alves and Mendy are my friends too," Depay told the press, assuring that he will never leave his friends. However, his words have not gone down well with the Dutch national team.

Koeman does not approve

Ronald Koeman, coach of the Netherlands, was questioned about Memphis Depay's public support for Quincy Promes, to which he assured that if he were Memphis, he would not do it since it is a very sensitive issue. "If I were him, I wouldn't do that. He can make things easier for himself if he doesn't do this. I understand that (Depay being friends with Promes). But in this case it's quite a sensitive matter".
