Former Arsenal midfielder and 1998 World Cup champion Emmanuel Petit has launched strong criticism towards Emiliano "Dibu" Martinez. The Frenchman, known for his no-nonsense approach, made it clear that he disapproves of the Argentine's actions both on and off the pitch.
"He recently said in an interview that he never goes too far. The guy needs psychotherapy, to see a psychiatrist, because we clearly do not have the same definition of what the limits are," said Petit.
"Frankly, he should learn how to control himself emotionally."
Despite acknowledging Martinez's abilities as a goalkeeper, Petit expressed concern over the image he projects wherever he plays.
"He should not be disrespectful. He should not resort to harassment. But it seems like, in every match, we are waiting for something inappropriate from him," he stated.
"He is a very good goalkeeper, but wherever he goes, he leaves behind an exasperating image."
For Petit, the line has been crossed too many times. While he accepts that provocation is part of the game, he believes Martinez often goes beyond what is acceptable.
"He has gone too far already. It is enough. I am the first to accept that provocation is part of football and life in general, but it should not constantly slip into denigration."
Martinez's passionate style has made him a symbol of Argentina's competitive spirit, but it has also placed him at the centre of numerous controversies. With voices like Petit's now joining the discussion, the debate around the goalkeeper's conduct is far from over.
