Kylian Mbappé made the news this week as he was officially announced as a new Real Madrid player, but he also made headlines after his comments on the comparisons between the EUROS and the World Cup. Mbappé said, “For me, the Euros is more complicated than the World Cup.” This brought a large debate between football fans, and now Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has responded to those comments. Martinez won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and assured that the World Cup is far tougher than any competition in football. Martinez said, “There is nothing more difficult than a World Cup, we all know that.” The Argentine goalkeeper did compliment the Copa America for being a difficult tournament as they will play every three days for the group stage and that the teams in this region have difficult teams.

Mbappé caused controversy in 2022 when he said that South American football is not as advanced as European football. Martinez reacted to that comment as well and he defended the football he grew up in. The World Cup winner said, “European football may be more advanced due to its structure, playing fields and competitions, but the talent, the grit and the strength are in South America.

Martinez talked about the different conditions of fields South Americans play compared to European football. Dibu Martinez said, “Europeans don’t know what it’s like to play in South America. They don’t know how hard it’s to play in La Paz, Bolivia, in Colombia and many other places. Europeans always play on perfect, wet courts, and they don’t know what South America is. Let them go to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador... Let’s see how easy it is for them.”

The other Argentine player who disagreed with Kylian Mbappé

Emi Martinez was not the only Argentina player to disagree with Mbappé about the EUROS being more difficult than the World Cup. Leandro Paredes talked with D Sports and he was asked about Mbappé's words. Paredes said, “He [Mbappé] also won the World Cup, the Euros I think not yet. We won the Copa America, Finalissima, the World Cup and we know how important and difficult World Cup is. We think about what we win, let everyone say what they want.”
