Fortaleza has officially announced the signing of David Luiz, the 37-year-old defender who was a free agent after leaving Flamengo. The experienced center-back, known for his successful stints in Europe and Brazil, chose Fortaleza over higher-paying offers from other Brazilian and international clubs, including Greece's Olympiakos.
“David Luiz had other proposals with much better financial conditions, but he chose Fortaleza because our project aligns more closely with his professional aspirations and life values,” said Marcelo Paz, the club's general director, in an official statement.
David Luiz arrives at Fortaleza after three seasons with Flamengo, where he won significant titles, including a Copa Libertadores and two Copa do Brasil trophies. His decision to leave Flamengo marks the end of a chapter in which he played a key role in the club’s domestic and international success.
Before returning to Brazil, Luiz spent 14 years in European football, where he built a remarkable career. His journey began with Benfica, later moving to Chelsea, where he was part of the team that won the UEFA Champions League in 2012. He also played for Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, adding multiple trophies to his collection.
David Luiz’s arrival strengthens Fortaleza's defensive line as the club looks to build on its ambitions for the upcoming seasons. The club has been active in the transfer market, securing five other signings for 2025: defender Gastón Ávila, goalkeeper Brenno, left-back Diogo Barbosa, midfielder Pol Fernández, and forward Dylan Borrero.
Luiz’s experience and leadership are expected to play a vital role in guiding a team that aims to compete at the highest levels in Brazilian and South American football.
