The 2025 Club World Cup group stage is reaching its boiling point. With excitement running high, the competition is getting more intense, and we're already seeing how the Round of 16 bracket is taking shape. The countdown has begun, and the first knockout round kicks off on June 28, promising matchups that will keep everyone glued to their screens.
The results from the latest matches have been a whirlwind of surprises and confirmations. While some giants have secured their spot confidently, others have had to fight tooth and nail until the last minute, and even some favorites have been unexpectedly knocked out.
Group A: The South American-North American Battle and Porto's Tragedy
This group kept us guessing until the very end. Palmeiras and Inter Miami had an intense fight for the lead, both finishing with 4 points. The Brazilians, with their usual strong play, secured first place thanks to a better goal difference. Meanwhile, Porto, who only had one point after two matches, needed a huge win against Al Ahly and for Palmeiras and Inter Miami not to draw. Unfortunately for the Portuguese, the math didn't work out, knocking them out. Al Ahly was also eliminated, showing how high the bar is in this tournament.
Group B: Atlético's Drama and Botafogo's Upset
This was, without a doubt, one of the most dramatic groups. Atlético Madrid got a crucial win against Botafogo on the last matchday. However, despite the win, goal difference played a cruel role, and Atleti was eliminated, creating a painful three-way tie at 6 points. PSG, who beat Seattle in their last game, qualified as group winners, showing their class. The big surprise was Botafogo, who, despite the final loss, advanced as group runner-up thanks to their earlier win over PSG themselves and a better goal difference than Atlético.
Group C: Bayern and Benfica Deliver, Boca Suffers and Is Out
In this group, the favorites played as expected. Bayern Munich held firm at the top, showing their power. Benfica also secured their spot as runner-up after consistent performances. As for Boca Juniors, their mission was almost impossible: they needed to beat Auckland by a lot of goals and hope Bayern defeated Benfica. Since this combination didn't happen (or they didn't get the necessary goal difference), the Xeneize couldn't advance, confirming the strength of the European teams in this section. Auckland City was eliminated with no chances.
Group D: Flamengo's Dominance and Chelsea's Fight
This group was dominated by South American brilliance. Flamengo had a spectacular group stage, with strong wins over Espérance de Tunis and Chelsea. By beating LAFC in their final match, the Mengão advanced as group winners with 9 points, with a perfect performance that positions them as a serious contender. Chelsea, with 3 points, shared the spot with Espérance but managed to secure their qualification as runner-up after beating the Tunisians in a direct clash, leaving Espérance de Tunis and LAFC out of the tournament.
With the qualified teams now decided, the Round of 16 bracket promises high-voltage matches. While the final draw (if applicable) or bracket seeding could still bring surprises, based on group winners and runners-up, we can anticipate some dream matchups.
Schedule: The Round of 16 matches will be played starting June 28, with staggered kick-off times to allow a global audience to enjoy every game. Exact times will be confirmed once the bracket is fully set.
