Chelsea have been searching for a striker for quite a while as the club have yet to properly replace Diego Costa, and the striker has been gone from the club for six years now. The list of failures is long, and new owner Todd Boehly is looking to end the curse of the number nine at Chelsea. Some big names have come through Stamford Bridge, but they have not succeeded whatsoever.

A few of the names that have worn Chelsea blue lately includes Alvaro Morata, Timo Werner, Gonzalo Higuain, and most noticeably Romelu Lukaku. All have come and all have failed. Lukaku was the one that had given fans the most hope as it appeared the club had just signed one of the worlds best strikers and for a record fee. Chelsea were coming off winning the Champions League that year so the excitement was overwhelming. And after a good start for the Belgian, it all went downhill. It has seen Lukaku go on loan moves back to Italy in back to back years.

This summer, Chelsea signed a player they believe could be a good player and help break that “curse” of the number nine. They wound up signing Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal and Christopher Nkunku. Nkunku is expected to play more of the ten, so Jackson has been given the freedom to be the nine. However, whilst the output has been good from the forward, it appears Chelsea still want to sign a bigger and more reliable number nine.

One of the names that has been heavily linked with the Blues is Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish striker has impressed all clubs by his performances at Sporting Lisbon with his 13 goals and eight assists. The player was in England last season at Coventry City where he enjoyed a fine campaign that saw him get this big move.

Gyokeres thoughts on Chelsea

Gyokeres is paying no attention to the rumors and is focusing on his campaign with Sporting. The striker said “I don’t think anything about it. I’m here and we have important games, I’m focused on that. There’s a lot of talk on social media and other places, but I’m not focused on that.”
